For safe & effective weight loss with the band, the dietary & eating habit changes were radical & difficult for some of the patients to achieve (like eating small mouthfuls, chewing well & eating slower).
Weight loss results were usually variable when compared with more aggressive weight loss surgery, like gastric sleeve or bypass. Weight loss in long term will also tends to be more difficult after the gastric banding as opposed to other type of weight loss procedures.
The gastric band is a mechanical device & therefore there may be issues in long term. Some of the patients will need further surgery in future to revise it.
May have problems with access port that can flip upside down, blocking access & requires minor surgery. The tubing near access port may also be punctured accidentally during the adjustment access and again requires minor surgery
Vomiting or dilation of esophagus may result from the overeating & it also requires strict adherence to postoperative diet & follow-up care
This surgery will have highest rate of required revision surgery.
